Facepaint was written in 2017. The song was first performed in the project Group Nap. When Simon and I started to record my music in our home in 2022, this was the first song we started teasing out. For a full year, we would open up facepaint and add one or two new samples or percussion elements to the original bass and vocal scratch, and eventually fleshed out a whole new environment for the song to live in. We continued this meticulous process, coaxing out the sounds within our heads and arranging the world of the song. The piece feels like it is living its full potential now, in a forest of electronic drums, tabla, bells and weird guitars.

This song is about swallowing down feelings for the sake of keeping things simple for others. It is about long distance love and the complexity of open relationships.
